A New Day

Taking a look at all of the things I've been missing

This Week’s Lips #14

Happy Sunday everyone!

I’m sitting here enjoying some leftover rose and watching the tail end of hockey season and editing photos. Today was a beautiful day – the dogs and I enjoyed the sun and while I hung out in the shade, they worked on their sun tans.

I love that there has been so much sunshine lately – it is such a mood lifter. That and it really helps get some great swatch photos!!

I think I was feeling pretty sassy this week… maybe that explains all of the red?

MondayGuerlain Rouge G in Gina – she is no stranger to this blog. Monday was rough, high end lipstick made it tolerable.

TuesdayMAC Lipgelee in Moon-something – remember this from my Project Pan? I still have this… I really should de-stash at this point. It still looks great though.

Wednesday – Tom Ford Ultra Shine Lip Gloss in Lost Cherry – the swatch is a bit deceiving – it wears much more opaque. It also leaves a great stain as it wears throughout the day. I want more of these.

Thursday – LORAC Couture Shine Lip Gloss in Glam – originally posted in my Top 5 favorites as an honorable mention. This wears so well. I will be so sad when I run out of this some day.

Friday – MAC Cremesheen Lipstick in Among the Fireflies – still has a short wear time, but I loooove the color.

There you have it – another week in the books!

Have a great week!

Use It: March 2017 Empties

Hi there!

Another month has flown by! As I mentioned briefly in my previous empties post, we started a major bathroom renovation at the end of February/beginning of March. This completely consumed my time – blogging has not even been on the radar. The project is mostly finished… it has been just the absolute worst. Remind me never to do another home improvement project!

This was a very productive month as far as using up things in my stash – I was living pretty minimally which helped me focus on using some things up also. Due to the volume, I’m going back to breaking everything down by type: skin care, makeup, body, hair and lifestyle/other. Sample reviews are posted to my Instagram (@lvp8779) as they are used.

SKIN CARE

Guerlain Orchidée Impériale The Toner – sigh. I still love this so much. This leaves my skin feeling so amazing. Full size available at Saks for $135 for 4.2oz.

Lush Breath of Fresh Air Toner – I purchased this originally for a face mist, but found it to work so much better as the first step of my morning skin care. After using a gentle cleanser or scrub, I used several pumps to spray evenly over my face. I found this gentle and refreshing without being too drying or creating more oil. I would definitely repurchase this again! Available at Lush for $10.95 for 3.3oz.

MAKEUP

L’Oréal Voluminous Mascara in Black – this arrived in an Allure box a while back and I kept stalling on using this. Shame on me – this is fantastic. I already have very long lashes that constantly hit my glasses, so I am always looking for a mascara that can add volume over length. My lashes are very light so I really like a pure black mascara to help my lashes pop behind my glasses. This added a lot of definition without feeling heavy. I would absolutely buy this! Available at Ulta for $7.99.

Marc Jacobs Beauty Enamored Hi-Shine Gloss Lip Lacquer Lipgloss – originally featured and swatched here. I like the minty aspect, but there is nothing spectacular about this. Full size available at Sephora for $28 for 0.16 oz.

Perricone MD No Lipgloss Lipgloss – it’s a balm. It’s a gloss… it’s… neither? It’s an anti-aging lip serum. I wore this so often on its own, as it had a lovely natural shade and was very lightweight, but I would also layer with another deeper gloss shade or lipstick. I didn’t notice any significant change in my lips while using this, so probably would not repurchase. Available at Sephora for $30 of 0.11oz.

Urban Decay 24/7 Velvet Glide-On Eye Pencil in Black Velvet – I typically love the 24/7 liners, however this one let me down. It completely dried out. I’ve never had this happen to the UD liners – I tried sharpening it several times and warming it up before applying… nope it’s done. This was a very, very deep matte black. I would give it another chance, but I have so many black liners.. I don’t need to rush out and buy it any time soon. Available at Urban Decay counters for $20 for 0.04oz.

BODY

Julep Bare Body Milk – this was a really nice, lightweight lotion. It is a fun, beachy fragrance, but there is nothing spectacular about it. I probably would not purchase unless I rejoin the Julep Maven subscription. I can’t currently find on the Julep website, but their items change frequently. I’m going to assume that this was about $20 for 6.8oz.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Aqua Universalis EDT – WOW. This is such a bright, clean scent – hints of citrus and bergamot stick with me 8+ hours. It also paired really well with the Body Milk. I would totally buy this. Available at Luckyscent.com for $195 for 70ml.

Skinfix Ultra Rich Hand Cream – this was fabulous – incredibly hydrating without leaving behind a greasy feeling. You can just feel all of the nourishing oils working their way into your skin. This reminded me quite a bit of the Kiehl’s Ultimate Strength Hand Salve. I would definitely purchase. Full size available at Ulta for $9.99 for 3oz.

Tony Moly Changing U Magic Foot – this is the second time I have used this. I had a different experience this time around – maybe my feet were reallllly bad? This was really effective in removing some really serious callouses. I would definitely repurchase. Available at Ulta for $6.50.

HAIR

Alterna Caviar RepairX Multi-Vitamin Heat Protection Spray – another long name, another useless hair product. I really don’t see the results from the Alterna products. I have stopped using my straight iron so my hair is exposed to less heat in general. But there is nothing that justifies that cost of this for me. Available at Ulta for $30 for 4.2oz.

Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo – I’m totally going to eat my words about this. Last time I used this I despised it. I decided to give this mini another chance and I have a completely different feeling about it. This experience was soooo much better – smell, texture, everything. If I used this on day 2 or 3, I would be able to skip using dry shampoo the next day. This worked so incredibly well. I actually went to look for the full size the other day but they were sold out. Available at Sephora for $13 for 0.8oz.

Sally Hershberger 24K Voluminous Dry Shampoo – this was terrible. I’m wondering if it wasn’t mislabeled hairspray? This did not cleanse my hair at all. My hair felt crunchy and stiff after using this. No thanks. I don’t know where it is available and am not bothering to look it up.

LIFESTYLE/OTHER

Illume Soy Candle in Noble Currant – I love currant scents! This little candle packed a big scent and burned at least 20 hours. Originally purchased on Birchbox.com for $10.

Julep Nail Color in Devon and Lori – one is great, the other is not. Devon is a slightly shimmery gunmetal that lasts 4-5 days without budging. I used this until there was no more. Lori is a thin, Jelly formula that NEVER DRIES. I have tried pairing this with other shades and using with the quick dry drops… nothing works. I gave up on this one. I would totally purchase Devon again. Available through Julep for $14 for 0.27oz.

This Week’s Lips #13

Hello again everyone!
Long time, no blog! We have been working on a massive home renovation project (more on that later) for a few weeks. This particular series went on hiatus due to there being no sunlight for the last few months. I love to take these photos outside – it has either been dark or snowing for a while…. so I’m getting back on track!

MondayBurberry Natural Sheer Lip Mist in Blueberry No. 206 – it had been a while since I last wore this and I ALMOST forgot how much I love this. Original post here.

Tuesday – Benefit Ultra Plush Gloss in Coralista – this is a simple sheer gloss. It is incredibly lightweight and can be worn on its own or over another shade. I really like the Benefit glosses – I think they may have gotten rid of some of the shades… too bad!

WednesdayL’Oréal Colour Riche Extraordinaire in Nude Ballet – yes… it is a staple!

Thursday – Bobbi Brown Lip Color in Raisin – this is a deep, full-coverage rust shade. Bobbi knows lipsticks. This is such a classic red-brown shade that is flattering on so many skin tones.

FridayMAC Lipglass in Seducing Sound – this is another color that has shown up a few times throughout this series. It is a slightly shimmery brown/plum that wears incredibly sheer. More detail here.

There you have it… getting back on track! I will hopefully get a few more posts up soon.

Have a great week!

Best of 2016 – Top Posts

Hello everyone!

I can’t believe it is the last week of December… Yikes! In keeping with the last couple years,  I am going to give the top blog posts, subscriptions and discoveries and favorites of the last 12 months. The first of these being the top rated posts of the past year.

I do want to say a special thank you to everyone who followed along on my journey of treating my perioral dermatitis. The photos weren’t pretty, but I shared some of the most personal info to date on the blog. It was a very physically painful time and it left me incredibly self-conscious. I am completely paranoid about its return, but believe that I have the tools to treat it.

#5 – Update: Progress with Perioral Dermatitis – this was a month into the antibiotic treatment and success with topical treatments.

#4 – A Recent Discovery and a Skincare Challenge – my first post after the PD diagnosis and the million ways that the internet suggested I treat it.

#3 – Finale: No More Perioral Dermatitis – obviously the final post at the end of the PD treatment. After 3 months of antibiotics and a diligent skincare regimen, I was almost exhausted from talking about it.

#2 – MAC Magnetic Nudes Review – this post was written in December 2013… and y’all still love it! This was MAC’s major relaunch of the Extra Dimension cheek colors and eye shadows.

And for the second year in a row….

#1 – MAC Prep + Prime CC Review – originally posted in February 2014, this gets a crazy amount of hits. You must love my color theory breakdown!

An additional thank you goes out to not just my readers in the US, but those in the UK, Canada, Germany, Hungary and Israel. I am so grateful for all of you and glad everyone is still here with me!

Thank you again for another wonderful year!

This Week’s Lips #10

Happy post-Thanksgiving week!

I hope all of my U.S. friends had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with friends and family. It was so wonderful catching up with everyone while they were in town. I ate too much… I drank too much… TOO MUCH HOLIDAY.

Monday – MAC Cremesheen Lipstick in Among the Fireflies – this is a limited edition shade from last year’s Faerie Whispers collection – one of my all-time favorites! This is a sheer, light brown that would compliment probably every skin tone. While it is a Cremesheen, it does lean a bit matte but is very creamy and does not dry out. The wear time on this is very short – about 2 hours. That is probably why I haven’t worn it too often…

Tuesday – MAC Lip Gelee in Moistly – does this look familiar? My much neglected project pan lip gloss from a while back. I haven’t completely given up on this yet. This is a very hydrating, sheer berry colored lip gloss. The shade is subtle but provides a nice wash of color. This wore comfortably for several hours.

Wednesday – MAC Matte Lipstick in Strip Me Down – originally featured here. For some reason, I found this to be less drying this time around. I only used a tiny bit of clear gloss on top.

ThursdayFord and Boys in Guillermo – oh yes. He’s back. This was one of my October favorites and continues to be well in to November. I just adore this shade!

FridayL’Oréal Colour Riche Extraordinaire in Nude Ballet – another shade that is no stranger to the blog. This is such an easy color to wear and formula just to swipe and go. I have backups of this. 😉

So there you have a very MAC-heavy week in review. I didn’t feel very creative this past week… let’s see if I can’t change it up this week!

This Week’s Lips #8

Hello again!

Finally getting back to normal and my regularly scheduled post about lipstick. You’re welcome 😉

MondayPerricone MD No Lipgloss Lipgloss – this tends to be my weekend go-to shade and an occasional weekday color. Monday was rough so I kept it pretty simple.

Tuesday – MAC Satin Lipstick in Verve – this is one of those classic great shades that I love to have in my collection. This is a great plummy/mauve-brown shade that wears beautifully. This is very buildable and I like to build up a couple coats, which wears evenly for 4-5 hours.

Wednesday (and Friday night) – Tom Ford Lips and Boys in GuillermoGuillermo is like the ridiculously expensive dupe of Verve. This leans a bit more plum than brown and I loooooove it. I have been holding out using this… I finally broke down and opened up the packaging and have been using it quite a bit over the last couple weeks. While the Lips and Boys lipsticks are much smaller, it is still the same satin formula that wears for about 6 hours.

ThursdayTom Ford Lip Color in Nude Vanille – it just keeps showing up every couple weeks. I love this color. I wore red eyeshadow (seriously… red) and wanted to balance it out – this shade was perfect.

Friday (day)Le Métier de Beauté – VIP shade – originally featured here. This wears comfortably for hours. It can easily be worn over any other lip product, but I do like to wear it on its own most of the time.

I really love transitioning to fall.. darker lip and eye shades, switching to a deeper blush and my clothing changing to cashmere and layers. I feel like this is definitely my season!

What are some of your fall go-to shades? What did you wear this past week?

Use It: October 2016 Empties

Hi there, hey there.

It’s been a few weeks… things have been really crazy on the home front, hence the blog silence. No worries though, everyone is doing well and we’re all getting back into a regular routine.

This was a very low-use product month. After plowing through a bunch of full size as well as sample sizes for Sample September, I think I really just focused on using the things that I love and getting back to a regular routine. With that being said, I still managed to use a few things and wanted to give you some reviews:

Bobbi Brown Ultra Fine Eyeliner Brush – I’ve had this brush for years and sadly it is time to say goodbye. It sort of frayed and no matter what I do I cannot reshape this. I actually trimmed some of the crazy hairs in hope of making it work but it still applies my liner erratically. This was a great brush – I could really pack a gel/cream eyeliner into both sides and get an even application well into the lash line. While I’m terrified of tightlining, this did make it easier to accomplish. I would consider repurchasing down the road. Available at Nordstrom for $28.

Ciaté Nail Polish in Members Only – I never loved this polish, but I also got it for free… maybe I don’t really have that much to complain about then? This is the only Ciate polish I have ever tried, but I’m not inclined to rush out and buy any. It was a very gel-like formula that only liked to be worn with one layer. I felt like this never really dried despite trying several top coats. This I can no longer use this because the brush doesn’t reach any further. Will not purchase. Full size available at Nordstrom for $14-$15.

Color Club Nail Lacquer in Status Update – this was a Birchbox find a while back. I really like their colors and formulas. This one could be worn with one coat, but I always prefer two just to make sure there are no opaque spots. Status Update is a deep, dark blueish grey that borderlines black and would easily wear 4-5 days without chipping or fading. As you can tell it isn’t empty, but the applicator broke. It is really difficult (and messy!) to try and use the inner applicator. I would repurchase this brand and shade. Available at Birchbox.com for $8-$9 for 0.25oz.

Julep Crème-to-Powder Eyeshadow Stick in Plum Shimmer – I opened this the other day and the crayon went flying out… guys, I still can’t find it. In the stick, this was a beautiful multihued purple. When applied, it lost its luster and was a flat plum shade. No shimmer like in the stick or dimension, just flat. I usually blended with a lighter, more shimmery shade to create a more ombre look. Long story short, I would not repurchase this shade. I would be willing to try a different shade however. Available on Julep.com for $18 for 0.04oz.

MAC Eyeshadow in Naked Lunch – this has been my go-to eye shadow single for years. I have gone through so many of these and have a few backups. This is the perfect neutral eye shade – it blends well with other shades, but I love to wear it just on its own. Naked Lunch is a buildable, multidimensional peachy-pink shade that looks flattering on so many skin tones. Repurchase? Always and forever. Available online and at all MAC counters for $16 for 0.04oz.

Maybelline Volum’ Express Colossal Mascara in Classic Black – this curled, separated, thickened and never clumped. It also would not come off. This clung to my lashes regardless of how much micellar water or eye makeup remover I used. It would not come off! I always felt like I had a crunchy layer of primer on. Again, this applied and looked fantastic… but I will never buy this again. Available at Ulta for $6.99.

Philosophy Purity Made Simple Facial Cleansing Gel and Eye Makeup Remover – for such a long title, you would expect magic but this also would not remove the Colossal Mascara! This was a very nice, simple cleanser. It would work into a slight foam and removed all of my makeup and left my skin soft and not stripped of moisture. This tube lasted forever – I’m actually happy to see it go so I can use up a bunch of other things that are piling up. I may repurchase some day. Available at Sephora for $23 for 7.5oz.

Tony Moly Changing Magic Foot Peeling Shoes – I heard that this was great dupe for the popular (and creepy) Baby Foot. The difference? About $20. I figured since I love Tony Moly masks, why not give this a chance. This is crazy. I wore these booties for an hour and a few days later, my feet started peeling like crazy. I won’t get all gross, but within a few days, even my most stubborn callouses were gone. This is a fascinating product. I already bought another. Available at Ulta for $6.

So there you have it!

This Week’s Lips #7

Happy Sunday!

I took a hiatus last week due to some personal stuff. I usually write down the first few days on Wednesday and finish the post Saturday or Sunday. By Wednesday, I was already swamped and completely overwhelmed so the post never even was drafted. This past week was a bit better so I’m going to try and stay on top of it going forward.

Monday – MAC Lipglass in Seducing Sound – this was released a couple summers ago as part of the Alluring Aquatic collection, which was maybe one of my favorites from the last decade. This is a beautiful, shimmery brown/copper/plum sheer nude shade. That sounds loaded, I know but it is the best way to describe it. This doesn’t have enough shimmer for it to be considered to be a Dazzleglass, but more than a typical Cremesheen. I always snag a spare at a CCO if I find it!

Tuesday – Lancôme Le Rouge Absolu in Crème de Marron – I’m really surprised to see that this is the first time this has been mentioned in this series. This is yet another brown-nude shade in my collection. Are you noticing a trend? I love the formula of the Le Rouge Absolu – very hydrating and lasts for several hours. I want more of these in my life!

Wednesday – Tarte Lippie Lingerie in Revealed and L’Oréal Colour Riche Lipstick in Eva’s Nude – ok I have to start this by saying that Lippie Lingerie is a really terrible name.. however, this color is phenomenal. It’s a beautiful red-hued brown shade that has applies like a dream and stays put for hours. I chickened out a bit as I walked out the door for work and applied a layer of Eva’s Nude over it to mute the shade a bit. The combination of the two worked very well together, the combined shades made it look quite similar to Tuesday’s Lancôme shade.

ThursdayLe Métier de Beauté Hydra Crème Lipstick in MoroccoI was really dragging by Thursday and decided to punch it up a bit with a great daytime red. This leans a bit pink/blue, but it is very subtle. This is quite different from the Guerlain Rouge G in Gina, which leans more orange. What I love about this shade is that while it is sheer, it can be built up to a full-coverage, bold shade.

Friday – NYX Chunky Dunk in Hibiscus Tea Punch – ok if Lippie Lingerie was terrible, Chunky Dunk is just the worst. Seriously, NYX? WTF. I think they changed the name after the release of this because it was so awful. Names aside, this is a fantastic product. This is a sheer pink-beige shade with decent pigmentation. This is not as long lasting as some of the other NYX formulas, but this feels more like a balm and is easy to reapply. I love how hydrating this is and I should be wearing this much more often!!

Saturday – MAC Matte Lip Color in Eugenie and Burberry Lip Mist in No. 206 Blueberry Eugenie on its own is tough… It’s a beautiful shade but really difficult to wear as a matte – it clumps, pulls and settles in every small line. It feels really dry and no amount of exfoliation makes it feel comfortable. When it is layered with Blueberry, it becomes a beautiful, deep cranberry shade that wears perfectly. Blueberry alone is a sheer, hydrating lip color that lasts for hours. The color in the tube is quite deceiving – it truly looks like the shade of smashed blueberries on your lips.

As I was writing this post, I realized that I am becoming less and less loyal to any specific brand. While my color preferences deviate very little, my expectation for performance is still high. I don’t particularly care if a product is $5 or $45, as long as it is a quality product, I’m content.

How have your preferences changed over the years? Do you find yourself becoming more open to different brands or are you becoming more loyal to just a couple of companies?

This Week’s Lips #4

Hello again!

Here we are in week 4 – and I’m still writing about my week in lipstick. This should not really surprise anyone who knows me. I just had a conversation in one of my friend group chats about my love for lipstick. It is possible that is just as deep as I get or I’m just really passionate about it. Then again, you are still here… reading my blog post about lipstick. So I think we understand each other. 🙂

I decided to try and get some use out of a couple minis and samples to hopefully do some de-stashing in the next couple months.

Monday – Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Naked – for some reason I have never really worn this… and I’ve definitely been missing out. This is the old formula – I would be interested to compare with the new Vice formula to see if they wear similarly. The pigmentation is great – it doesn’t apply patchy or sheer out. This wears comfortably for 3-4 hours before it starts to settle in lip creases and needs reapplied.

Tuesday – Marc Jacobs Beauty Enamored Hi-Shine Gloss Lip Lacquer Lipgloss – I believe this is the shade Allow Me or Love Drunk – can’t tell because the sticker fell off. This is a sheer, mauvy-pink with a lot of shimmer. If you look at it in the tube, it looks like there are huge chunks of glitter which I assure you do not appear when applied. This sheer gloss provides a nice wash of color with a lot of shine and the minty scent provides a nice pick me up in the afternoon.

Wednesday – Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche in Thistle – can’t stop, won’t stop.

Thursday – Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche in Nori – clearly, I love Bite products. Nori is a very pigmented brown based red. If last week’s brown-red (MAC Enchanter) was for those afraid of reds, I would advise those folks to steer clear! I find these formulas to be hydrating and long-lasting. After a second coffee and lunch, I only needed a light touch up to make the color last the remainder of the work day. Even then, my lips still had a color stain when I went to remove my makeup at 10 pm.

Friday – MAC Matte Lipstick in Strip Me Down – this is the lone shade from the collaboration with Taraji P. Henson – this is described as a “deeptone beige,” but I feel it has much more depth than that. I feel like it sits on the line of coral/rust-toned on me. This definitely changed up a week of pink. I realize this is a matte formula, but I found it to be very drying. It wore several hours, but somewhat uncomfortably… A light layer of clear gloss really helped.

Saturday – Tarteist Lip Paint in Rave – I took this out for a daytime spin this time. We decided to get out of the house on a rainy Saturday and go antiquing. So Rave seemed totally appropriate! If you follow me on Instagram (@lvp8779) you saw it in this photo with an amazing vintage Dior hat. You also might have witnessed some really odd vintage furs with faces. 🙂

What did you wear this week? Are you getting excited about the release of holiday collections and limited edition shades?

This Week’s Lips #3

Cheeeers to the freakin weekend!

I don’t know about you all, but I’m seriously exhausted for it being a 4-day week. My work life was a bit crazy this week and on top of it, I’ve been battling some ongoing chronic health stuff. We’re on week 2 of fatigue, stomach pain and constant medication. It’s been just GREAT.

As a pick me up, I decided to revisit my favorite and absolute comfort lipstick, while revisiting a couple other familiar shades. So here we go:

Sunday and Monday – I continued to wear the shit out of Bite Thistle.

Tuesday – MAC Viva Glam V – this is probably my all-time favorite and most used lipstick. Featured a while back in my Top 5 Lip Products post, this has been a staple in my makeup bag for over a decade. This is a more brown-based pink neutral with a hint of shimmer. I’ve worn this with virtually every possible color combination and it looks great.

Wednesday – MAC Cremesheen Glass in Enchanter – this was part of the Faerie Whispers collection that launched right after Christmas 2015. I loved everything in this collection! This was the standout lip product for me – I actually bought a backup, but just realized that this is still available online! This is so different than any other gloss I own – it’s a brown-based red with a hint of shimmer. The gloss itself is very sheer but looks very dark in the tube – it’s a bit deceiving. If you want to try a red but are afraid to commit to a more pigmented shade, give this a chance!

ThursdayBite Beauty BB for Lips in Tawny with MAC Dazzleglass in Moth to Flame – the first repeat! See Week #1.

FridayBenefit Ultraplush Lipgloss in Sugarbombthe second repeat! See Week #1.

I hope you all are enjoying this weekly series. It is making me focus more on how often I actually wear some products… and perhaps serve as a reminder that I don’t need to buy anything else!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
