A New Day

Taking a look at all of the things I've been missing

Use It – January 2015

on February 2, 2015

Happy February, everyone!

I hope it is warm and sunny wherever you are! It is quite the opposite here, however is to be expected in the Midwest. Sigh.

This was a great Use It month, as I once again finished off a good number of full-size products and made way for some new things in my daily rotation. So lets get to it.

– Benefit Instant Comeback Facial Serum – Benefit’s skin care can be a little hit or miss for me. However, I kind of liked this serum… I don’t know if I would purchase the full-size. It performed well, was hydrating and smelled amazing, but it was missing something. I want to try this again in the summer – I think this is the wrong season for this one. Stay tuned… The full-size serum is available on the Benefit website for $46.

Clinique Clarifying Lotion #2if you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you know this is a staple in my daily routine and I go through a bottle of Clarifying Lotion every 6-7 months. Previously mentioned here and here, this product helps my skin get the feeling of squeaky clean after a few layers of makeup. I typically go for the 13.5oz bottle from Sephora for $23.

nügg Beauty Revitalizing Face Mask – OUCH. This little container caused some serious damage. First of all the peppermint scent is strong.. I should have realized that it was because there was so much peppermint oil in the mask. Instead of moisturizing, it left my face dry, flaky and really sensitive for a couple days. It took some serious work to undo the damage. There are a number of other options by this brand, but I probably wouldn’t give it a second chance.  You can purchase a 5-pack on the Birchbox website for $14.99.

Origins GinZing Energy-boosting Moisturizer – this little packet contained the most amazing smelling moisturizer! This foil offered 4 days of testing and I feel like I got a really good sense of the product – and it was fantastic, just a little under-hydrating (is that a word?). This would probably make a better summer moisturizer and I would definitely be willing to give it a chance. You can find this at Sephora and Origins for $26.50.

Peter Thomas Roth 24K Gold Mask Pure – I love, love, loved this, however could not bite the bullet on the $80 price tag for another mask when I already have so many. I talked about this here in my weekly favorites a while back. I think you can only find this on the PTR website, as it was only at Sephora in a limited edition holiday set.

Shiseido Pure Retinol Express Smoothing Eye Mask – this worked very well, I just wish there was more than one use. This brightened and depuffed very well during the 15-minute application. Based on the one use, I don’t know if I can determine whether or not I would purchase. These eye masks come in packs of 12 for the price of $63 at Nordstrom (affiliate link).

Estee Lauder Sumptuous Infinite Daring Length + Volume Mascara in 01 Black – this was a very wet formula. It took a long time to dry and left my lashes looking… weird. I ended up using in combination with the Hourglass mascara (see why below) and it helped finish off the look. Part of the problem might be that the formula and brush weren’t a good fit. I think if the brush was more dense, the overall result would have been much more polished. This was a sample from the Hautelook fall bag – so glad I didn’t purchase this. Full size is $26 and available at Sephora, Macy’s and Amazon.

Hourglass Film Noir Full Spectrum Mascara in Onyx – now this brush was excellent – it separated and the formula coated each lash. Unfortunately, I found it to be really dry, but I don’t know if this is normal or if I had a dud. I would definitely give this another chance, as I really like Hourglass products. This can be found at Sephora for $28 for a full-size.

Arbonne Intelligence Herbal Foot Cream – another item from the Intelligence line bites the dust. I finished off the body lotion last month and had lukewarm feelings about it. This was definitely better – a much thicker consistency and better overall moisturizer. I wasn’t a fan of this scent though. This too has been discontinued, so I will obviously not repurchase.

C.O. Bigelow Superb Body Cleanser in Rosemary Mint – I’m pretty embarrassed to admit how long I’ve had this shower gel… I bought it for my husband initially and after a while realized he was never going to use it. So I’ve been using it off and on for uh, a while. I originally purchased at Bath and Body Works for $13.00 for 10oz. I think the only place you can find this now is at the Bigelow Apothecary in New York or online. I would consider repurchasing if it were more convenient.

Tree Hut Shea Sugar Scrub in Pomegranate Acai – gosh, it SOUNDS so nice, right? Oh and then it smells GREAT! Unfortunately, it felt like it was ripping off my flesh. This was one of the harshest scrubs I have ever used. I would never purchase anything from this line again. However, if you wish to do so, it’s like $6-8 at Ulta and Target.

This month I didn’t have any hair or lifestyle products, however I’m sticking to my guns and going to toss a couple things that either don’t work or are past their prime:

The Body Shop Cranberry Bliss Lip Balm – I found this in a purse I haven’t used in a couple years. I love pretty much anything Cranberry Bliss, but that is where I draw the line.

Mary Kay Satin Lips Lip Mask – this is a gritty lip exfoliant that has been in my cabinet for ages. I stopped using it because it was a bit too harsh. It worked really well, but I wanted something a bit less harsh.

Oscar Brandi Pronto Dry Shampoo – so you’re probably thinking, Laura you love this dry shampoo… well… typically yes. I bought this one at TJMaxx and I used it for a while but it really did not perform well – it left my hair greasy and weighed down. I read an article recently about buying salon products not at the salon and this is probably why… it didn’t smell or feel right. It was probably pretty old. Oops.

So there you have it, folks. This month included a conscious number of sample products. I am going to loosely participate in the #sampledout challenge on Instagram and while I know I won’t be “sample free by 2016”, I do hope to make some significant dents in my product hoard. My full product reviews will be in my monthly Use It post, but will be sharing some quick feedback in Instagram – follow along: @lvp8779

What did you use up this month? Have you tried any of the products above?
