A New Day

Taking a look at all of the things I've been missing

Use It – December 2014

on January 7, 2015

Farewell, December. Hello, January!

Another month has passed us by and another batch of used products has piled up in my dressing room. In using these products, I feel like I finally made a dent in the hoard when pulling their replacements out of the drawer.

In keeping with the last couple months, I’ve broken everything up by skincare, makeup, body, hair and lifestyle.

Chapstick Hydration Lock – a little Birchbox lifestyle extra.. um, ok. I misread the “8 hour moisture” as SPF. No, there is no SPF. I discovered that the hard way at an outdoor music festival. Ouch. This is fine as a balm, but I would probably not repurchase due to the lack of SPF. Available on Amazon for $5.49, or a pack of 12 for $23.88.

Murad Acne Clearing Solution – again, the magical cure for hormonal acne. I wrote about this here and here, with links upon links… would I purchase? Of course. You can find this at Sephora for $39 for 1.7 oz.

My Beauty Diary Caviar Mask – this was a gift from my dear friend Billie, who finds some of the most amazing skincare and beauty products. This was an incredibly moisturizing and amazing smelling mask. It claims to increase elasticity, firmness and luster. This was my first caviar mask and I would definitely purchase more in the future! I found some for purchase on Amazon for $14.34 for 10 individual masks, which is probably the best price out there.

ck one mascara in black – Happy Birthday from Ulta! I almost wish they hadn’t. I like the idea – an adjustable wand that gives the option to lengthen or thicken. But the formula is just awful. This mascara left my eyelashes crunchy and heavy after drying. Sometimes it would flake off, but it always refused to come off… no amount of face wash, eye makeup remover or cleansing cloths would remove it. I finally just gave up and stopped using it. This retails for $18 at Ulta.

NYX Matte Blotting Paper – I talked about these back in my September Use It post. I stocked up a while ago when NYX products were 40% off and would buy again and again. These are available at Ulta for $3.99 (50 sheets).

Arbonne Intelligence Body Lotion – recommended for dry skin, however I didn’t find it to be all that moisturizing. The formula was a bit thin and while it helped my dry hands, I often needed to use another moisturizer on top before bed. Arbonne is hit or miss on their products. While I find their SeaSource Detox line to be phenomenal, this selection from the Intelligence line is a definite miss. It doesn’t look like this is available on the website any longer.

bliss Soapy Suds in Blood Orange+White Pepper (affiliate link) – I used up it’s scrubby counterpart last January and have been working through this bottle probably since the spring? I do love this scent, but by the end just really wanted to be done… I would repurchase, but have 2 more giant bottles of this same scent hidden away and will probably revisit later this year. The 16oz. bottle with a pump is a great deal – $18 on the bliss website.

Kiehl’s Olive Fruit Oil Nourishing Shampoo (affiliate link) – my husband actually used this one up. When I asked his opinion, he said, “it wasn’t as sudsy as the other stuff.” So there you go. I will say on his behalf that it smelled wonderful and clean, not overwhelming and left his hair very soft. You can find this in multiple sizes (2.5oz – 33.8oz) and price range ($7-$48).

LIFESTYLE – in this case, it’s nail polish… I don’t know what else it would fall under.

Julep Nail Color in Love – this was a special release for February 2014 – a gold full coverage shimmer with pink flecks. This was an okay polish. The color was fun, but the formula flaked within 48 hours of application. This is a great polish to spruce up some flaking tips or do an accent nail. Julep nail polish runs $14 ($11.20 for Mavens) for .27oz. Click on this affiliate link to learn how to sign up for this monthly subscription.

Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Top Coat – I go through a bottle of top coat every few months. This is my absolute favorite, go to product. After applying a base coat, 2 coats of color, apply a thin coat and boom. Done. It sets in 1-2 minutes and doesn’t budge or chip. I usually buy this from Ulta when it is buy one, get one free or 50%. Regular price is $5.99.

And finally,

OPI Nail Laquer in Wocka Wocka and Rainbow Connection – Can you believe it? I’m giving up on something. I bought these years ago and just really never loved them. Its time to say farewell!

As I was getting ready for bed last night, I heard my cat making all kinds of strange noises in the hallway. I found her in distress and limping around, clearly in pain. She seems to be feeling well today and was even helping me get some photos for this post. I thought I would share a photo of Lucille since she is not feeling so hot. Meow.

Have a wonderful January! Stay warm!!

Hallelujah! Someone else who feels the same way about the ck one mascara. I wanted to like it, but couldn’t as I was losing eye lashes at the rate I was.

  2. […] – another item from the Intelligence line bites the dust. I finished off the body lotion last month and had lukewarm feelings about it. This was definitely better – a much thicker consistency […]
