A New Day

Taking a look at all of the things I've been missing

Use It – October

on November 2, 2014

Happy November! AH – how can it be already?

The fall colors are gone and it is COLD!

I feel like this month’s high product use is cause to break it up into a few categories – skincare, makeup, body, hair and lifestyle (I guess…?). Long story short, I was a product using beast this month. Some of that is due to excessive travel, the other reason is that I had a ton of stuff juuuust at the end. Either way, I hope you enjoy my October trash summary!

SKINCARE:

EcoTools Pure Complexion Facial Sponge for Sensitive Skin – originally reviewed through Influenster here and then again in my August Use It post. Clearly, it is one of my go-to products and I will definitely repurchase. This can be found at Ulta for $5.99 – keep an eye out for the buy 1, get 50% off deals!

GLAMGLOW Supermud Clearing Treatment – ok I think I get it now. Glamglow is the real deal. I got this and a few other samples from the Neiman Marcus beauty event and I want to use them all, but hoard them all at the same time… this stuff is so good. It really helped to undo some of the damage from the Paula’s Choice serum (see below).  However, I don’t know if I can justify the price for a mask that I hear dries out quickly… So if anyone is wondering what to get me for Christmas… Sephora has this right now for $69 for 1.2 oz.

GLAMGLOW Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment – it burns, but in a good way (I think). This had some odd leaves mixed in that clumped up on my face and in my shower. That aside, this was a wonderful, quick-drying mask that left my skin feeling fresh, smooth and oil-free. Between the two that I tried this month, I preferred the Supermud described above.

Lancôme Advanced Génifique Youth Activating Concentrate (affiliate link) – I received this generous sample from Nordstrom and loved every minute of it until I dropped it and it went flying all over my hotel bathroom. Oops. This left my skin soft, smooth and added an extra level of hydration. Its a bit pricy, but I think its worth it. I would purchase. Nordstrom is currently running 10% off price matching on all sizes – 1 oz. – $75.60; 1.6 oz. – $93.60; 2.5 oz. $120.60.

Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser – this was a nice face wash. Just nice. It was gentle,  but I really like to make sure all of my makeup is removed and this didn’t guarantee that. The eucalyptus scent was really calming and great to end the day, but that’s about it. This has been my travel face wash for months – it really does last. Just not for me. Available through Birchbox for $21.50 for a 3.3 oz bottle

L’Oreal Revitalift Radiant Smoothing Wet Cleansing Towelettes – these wipes were great for gently removing eye products, which I really appreciate. Overall, they were too heavily scented – a nice scent, but not for my face. Would probably not repurchase. There are available at Ulta for $6.99 for a 30-pack.

Murad Acne Clearing Solution – I received some samples from my friend Laura, who is a Murad Brand Ambassador. You all know I love Murad, especially their Acne Clearing line. After 2 weeks of poor diet and nasty travel skin, I tried it out. This particular product boasts clearer skin in 72 hours and it really did clean things up. Use twice a day for 3 days and POOF – clearer skin! Some clarifying products can really dry out your skin and this actually left my skin very hydrated. I would purchase for sure. You can find this at Sephora for $39 for 1.7 oz.

Paula’s Choice Resist C15 Super Booster (2) – there is a dedicated post here about this product received through BzzAgent. It was really disappointing. Purchase? No way.

Sisley At Night The Supreme Anti-Aging Eye Serum – this was a pretty generous sample and I think it lasted about a month, which is plenty of time to see some amazing effects. This aggressively treated the fine lines around my eyes and was very hydrating. And it should yield crazy good results for the price – $315 for… I don’t even know the size. Neiman’s doesn’t list the ounces. Ouch. No, I won’t be buying this.

SLCosmetic Soo Effect Plus Essence Sheet Mask (2) – originally featured here and then again in my travel heavy weekly favorites post here. This was my first foray into sheet masks and I was really pleased with how moisturizing they were and how well they calmed my parched skin. I would definitely buy again. These are available for $2 each on the Memebox website. Save $5 off your November order of $30 or more with my affiliate code: YEJ239

MAKEUP:

Elizabeth Mott Smooth Shadow Pencil in Penny – as much as I liked this pencil in Pearl, I disliked Penny. The color payoff wasn’t great and it took multiple passes to actually get it to show up. It looks like Amazon has this for $15 – in my opinion, not worth it.

fresh SUGAR Rose Tinted Lip Treatment – and another one bites the dust… This is the second one I’ve gone through this year – featured previously here. I have a bunch of these mini tubes hanging around which is great because I just don’t think I could justify the price ($20-$23). Ask me again when I run out 😉

Julep nail polish in Greta – another nail polish down! It feels like such an accomplishment! This was a glittery cranberry color. It was perfectly nice, but I have so many colors that I probably wouldn’t repurchase. This is available on the Julep website for $14 ($11.20 for Mavens). If you are interested in joining the Julep monthly subscription program, click here for my referral link.

MAC Studio Tech Foundation in NW15 – so I decided to give cream foundation again… as well as MAC foundation. For the longest time, NW15 was too dark, but this particular formula was spot on. I started using this last spring and it was perfect for the season, however terrible for summer. I tried to use it throughout the summer, but it really left me looking greasy and shiny regardless of primer or matte base. Since the humidity and heat dropped back off, it has been working well again. I might repurchase, but not anytime soon. One more for my Back 2 MAC pile! Available at all MAC stores and counters for $32 for 0.35 oz.

BODY:

Aesop Body Balm in Geranium Leaf (1) – This. Is. Amazing. I loved the rich texture and long lasting scent. I stopped by the new shop in Boston and since I was limited to 3 oz carry on size, did not purchase anything. However, the woman at the shop was amazing and taught me about the products and sent me out the door with a few samples to test out. I taught her that geranium is a wonderful PMS reliever. The 4 oz tube of this is $35 and I would absolutely buy it.

Dr. Lipp Original Nipple Balm for Lips – with a name like that, there are some pretty high expectations. It was ok. I used it. It wasn’t long lasting or super hydrating, but it worked. The full size is available on Birchbox for $14.50.

Kiehl’s Ultimate Strength Hand Salve – what a life saver! This super thick, incredibly hydrating lotion really helped out my constantly dry hands. I loved the clean eucalyptus scent and the long lasting effect and miss it already! I would definitely purchase again. Available on the Kiehl’s website in 2.5 and 5 oz ($15-$22). And don’t forget to save your Kiehl’s empties! 10 empty containers get you a free product!

Molton Brown Pink Pepperpod Body Wash (affiliate link) – Molton Brown comes up with some really interesting and wonderful combinations. This one was just… weird. It was really spicy and well, peppery. This was a Nordstrom bonus sample and not one of their best.. this is available in the 10 oz. size for $27-$30.

Olay Quench Daily Lotion – I’m surprised I never listed this in my favorites posts… I’ve been using this for years – its just a wonderful lightweight, lightly scented body moisturizer that I use year-round. Sadly, Ulta stopped carrying this s0 I can’t get points for repurchase there.. There are a few versions of this including firming and shimmer (ooh!) available at Walgreens starting at $8.79 for 11.8 oz. or an amazing holiday set with the 11.8 oz  lotion, body wash, razors and shave cream for $10!!

Ole Henriksen Vitamin C Protect the Truth SPF 50+ – I finally made it through one of my Sephora sun care kit samples. This was a fantastic lightweight, non-greasy sunscreen. I felt like this really protected my skin while moisturizing it as well. I don’t know if I would splurge on the full-size (1.7 oz) tube of this. There are other great sunscreens for less than $35!

HAIR:

Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Dry Shampoo – this was a decent powder dry shampoo. It was okay, but didn’t perform nearly as well as the Oscar Blandi dry shampoo powder. I’m not so sure about the anti-aging claim either… This lasted several h0urs and was great for travel. Full size (2.65 oz) is available at Sephora for $22.

Fekkai Brilliant Glossing Shampoo and Conditioner – I received these samples from Influenster and recently reviewed here. I loved both, but it really killed my color. Would probably not purchase these specific items in the line, but would totally repurchase the styling crème. I will stick with the color protect shampoo and styling/straightening products. Travel sizes (2 oz) is $5 and full size (8 oz) is $20.

Serge Normant Dry Conditioner – I don’t know… I still don’t get it.. there really wasn’t a noticeable difference when I did use it. It smelled nice. Would not purchase. Available through Birchbox for $25 (3.2 oz).

LIFESTYLE:

Bath and Body Works Anti-Bacterial Hand Gel in Hoot Berry – come on… it’s called Hoot Berry – what’s not to love? I am a neurotic hand sanitizer during cold season. I carry these everywhere and typically have at least 3-4 hoarded away in my product stash. This was seasonal from last year so probably won’t be able to find this same scent.. I think they are regularly about $2 each and are usually in some sale promo.

Crest 3D White Polishing Treatment – so why am I putting toothpaste on here? Because it sucked. I tossed this in to my Ulta order a while back since I was running low on toothpaste. It was $7 for 2 oz. This didn’t whiten or brighten. No way. Never again.

Kneipp Herbal Bath Cold & Sinus Relief – I talked about this last week here. I would repurchase this in a heartbeat! I purchased this for $5.50 (20ml bottle) from Merz Apothecary and can be foundnat smallflower.com

Lush Dream Steam – these little tabs are made up of lavender oil, rose absolute, tea tree oil and chamomile to be inhaled or used on the skin. Since I have skin reactions to lavender oil, this could only be used for respiratory relief during trip to help my cold. It really helped relieve some of my sinus pressure. These little gems can be purchased at Lush for $2.95.

White Barn Candle Company Passion Fruit and Guava candle – this was an ancient candle that I started burning forever ago and finally hit the bottom of the wick. On the plus side, it had an incredibly long burn time for 4 oz., but on the negative side, it burned really unevenly. I would probably repurchase if I could find it again. This is one of Bath and Body Works partner companies and will keep an eye out in the spring.

WHEW. So there you have it, folks. It always feels great to unload some stuff from my bathroom and travel bags, as well getting to have the fun in opening and trying something new!

What did you use up this month?
