A New Day

Taking a look at all of the things I've been missing

April Ipsy Review

on May 1, 2014

Hello April! I’m so excited to have received 2 amazing subscriptions this month. Not only was I happy with Birchbox, I was equally happy with ipsy!

This months theme was Beauty Rocks – an edgy take on products this time around.

“Life is a dance floor, so why not live it up, sing out loud, and shake them hips?! This month, we’re celebrating our unique beauty to the sound of tunes and festivals that fill the spring air. So, whether you’re chilling in a campground or spinning in a ballroom, all of your April “Beauty Rocks!” products will help your lovely look become a hit!”

Below is the photo of this months bag… it smelled funny so it went in the trash. 😦

Cailyn “Indulge in colors that last and formulas that enrich! This ultra matte, super moisturizing lip balm offers you rich colors with amazing staying power.

+ 3D Smart Film Former: This advanced technology stabilizes pigment powders and allows color stay put longer without losing its vibrancy. This balm won’t smudge or need to be retouched as daytime transforms into evening.

+ Moisturizing: Infused with carnauba wax and beeswax, this tinted lip balm moisturizes and conditions the delicate skin of the lips while restoring its health naturally. Its unique formula penetrates deeply to help heal and prevent wrinkling, roughness, and dryness.
+ Versatility: For slick, matte texture, wear it on its own for long-lasting color. Or coat it with CAILYN Pearly Shimmer Balm for more glamorous, shimmery pout.”

Feedback: I found this packaging to be odd. Don’t you think it is strange and bulky? The color is very nice and went on super smooth, however the product felt like it really dried out my lips. It didn’t really feel like a balm. I’m thinking if I pair this with a different gloss it will be much more wearable.

City Color – White Gold Shadow & Highlight Mousse – “Brighten your eyes and cheekbones with the City Color White Gold Shadow & Highlight Mousse. This smooth and creamy product is enriched with luminosity, providing a beautiful gold sheen finish. Use as an eye shadow base as well as a highlighter.”

Feedback: this is soooo thick. I did a test patch on my arm and it was very difficult to spread and blend. The gold color did not produce an even swatch. I put this on in the evening and it completely disappeared by morning… in 8 hours there was no sign of the product on my arm. I tried a second swatch later and was really unhappy with the texture… this is not a product I would use on my face… seriously.

dr. brandt® microdermabrasion – “The dr. brandt® microdermabrasion gently sweeps away dead skin cells and softens skin texture, which enables better absorption of skincare products and helps diminish the appearance of fine lines, acne marks, and skin discolorations. A great at home alternative to professional clinical treatments. Safe to use for all skin types. For best results use with dr. brandt® skincare products.

– Slowly and gently massage cream onto skin for 1-2 minutes avoiding the eye area
– Rinse well, pat dry
– Best if used 1- 2 times per week allowing 3 days between applications”

Feedback: this is another brand that I’ve heard much about, but never tried. Due to the sensitive nature of my skin, there was no way I could even gently exfoliate with this product for 1-2 min. I lost track of the time, but this product worked incredibly well. It had a light lemongrass scent and left my skin feeling soft and smooth. I will definitely use this until it runs out – probably only once a week though.

 – Sexy Hair Root Pump Volumizing Spray Mousse – “The Sexy Hair Root Pump Volumizing Spray Mousse helps create big volume by pumping up hair at the root. It dispenses out as a spray and turns into a mousse to give tresses tons of volume. Apply to damp hair at the root to achieve phenomenal lift or to dry hair to activate textural volume. Resists humidity and provides lift, fullness and medium hold. Great for fine/medium hair types.”

Feedback: big volume is the last thing I need… humidity seems to work wonders for big hair. I will pass this on to a friend.

 – Urban Decay – 24/7 Velvet Glide-On Eye Pencil Travel Size – “A must for smoky-eye fanatics: an ultra-plush version of UD’s creamy, waterproof 24/7 formula. Create perfectly blended-out or rich, precise lines that are blacker-than-black.”

Feedback: oh, another black liner. Yawn. Just as I was about to toss this into the drawer next to the Cynthia Rowley silver liner from Birchbox after swatching, I decided to give it a quick try. This is no ordinary black liner. Wow, does it live up to the hype. It went on so smooth and crisp and it didn’t move! In the look below, I went heavy on the upper lid and light on the lower lashes and water line. After waiting a few seconds, I went over the entire lid (including the liner on top and bottom) with my new Laura Mercier Caviar Stick in Sugar Frost (thanks, Birchbox points!). This combination stayed put for 12 hours. No smudging, smearing or fallout.

This was a great mix of products and while I didn’t love everything, I was really happy overall. What did you get in your Glam Bag this month?
