Taking a look at all of the things I've been missing

February Birchbox Review

on February 23, 2014

February’s box – Us Weekly’s Red Carpet Picks. Step. Pose. Repeat.

Ok, it was pretty terrible. I may have even made this face:

(Thanks, Ashley for keeping the unimpressed Olympics reactions fresh…)

Here is this month’s box with Birchbox description:

 – Bain de Terre passion flower Color Preserving Shampoo – “Whether you’re diehard about your highlights or you were an early adopter of the ombré trend, your color-treated locks needs some love. This potent shampoo goes beyond cleansing to deeply moisturize and restore, while preserving the integrity of your hair color. So you can maintain your current hue (whatever it may be).

This intensely nourishing, paraben-free shampoo is formulated with a powerfully conditioning and restorative blend of argan and monoi oils. Proven to maintain the vibrancy of color-treated hair by 85% (after 18 washes or between color services), it also has a lingering passion flower fragrance that we love.”

Feedback: this smelled amazing. I washed and repeated, as the box theme suggested. I didn’t get the normal super clean feeling from this shampoo. It wasn’t bad, but could have been more deep cleansing.

 – Bain de Terre passion flower Color Preserving Conditioner – “When it comes to color, the real question is what haven’t you tried? But don’t fret: Your frazzled strands aren’t beyond repair. This intensely reparative conditioner not only nourishes your color-treated locks, it also preserves the vibrancy of your color. Even better, the passion flower-scented formula is paraben-free.

This rich conditioner harnesses the power of natural botanical extracts and Bain de Terre’s signature blend of argan and monoi oils. Regenerative argan oil leaves hair shiny and smooth, while monoi oil targets follicles to provide deep hydration and soft, silky results.”

Feedback: I never should have put this in my hair. After washing, I ran a dime size portion through the lower half of my hair as usual and left it in for a couple minutes. Upon rinsing, it felt heavy and oily. I made the Mr. take an outdoor shot of the after look. Does it look as greasy as it feels? 24 hours later, all I want to do it wash my hair again. I tried to get rid of some of the oil this morning with dry shampoo and it didn’t help at all.

Miracle Skin Transformer Face Spotlight SPF 20 -“Our vanity shelf was about to hang out the “no vacancy” sign—until this multitasking face tint showed up. Truth be told, it performs the function of a small army of skincare products: It hydrates, illuminates dull skin, minimizes pores and fine lines, and protects against solar rays. Our skin is left brighter and smoother, with just the slightest hint of a golden glow. Which means that in a pinch, it’s more likely to make it into our makeup bag than our foundation or moisturizer.

In this lightweight formula, light-diffusing minerals help brighten up dull skin while glycerin smooths and hydrates. The oh-so-subtle tint works for most skin tones and adds just a hint of gold shimmer. Plus, the formula is full of skin-improvers (think: vitamins and antioxidants) that nourish and hydrate while fending off the signs of premature aging. For the sun-conscious, the broad spectrum SPF 20 protection is a major plus.”

Feedback: haven’t sampled yet

StriVectin-AR™ Advanced Retinol Eye Treatment – “Bring on the cat videos, The Onion articles, and episodes of The Colbert Report. Thanks to this eye cream, we’re not afraid of laugh lines and eye crinkles. The antiaging formula gently nourishes sensitive skin around the eyes, resulting in a smoother texture and more even tone, and minimizes dark circles and puffiness. The treatment has become an essential part of our nightly ritual, right along with brushing our teeth, setting our alarm, and falling asleep playing Candy Crush.

StriVectin’s award-winning formula includes powerful antiaging actives NIA-114 (a form of niacin) and retinol to battle the signs of aging and reveal renewed skin without causing irritation. NIA-114 activates and ramps up retinol’s effects while it also reduces retinol sensitivity. And nourishing shea butter lends a hand in the hydration department. The result is a paraben-free, noncomedogenic cream that’s effective, yet gentle enough to use on your delicate undereye area.”

Feedback: haven’t sampled yet. This is  a very generous sample – it should give plenty of use for adequate results.

32 Oral Care Effervescent Breath Crystals with IsoVoxy – “If you miss spending your summer days with nothing but time to kill and a packet of Pop Rocks, then you’ll be happy to find these Effervescent Breath Crystals, which attack halitosis with the ferocity of that sweet, crackling candy. The science rests on a mix of bacteria-fighting ingredients that, when in contact with germ-filled teeth and gums, erases the effects of embarrassing odors caused by things like coffee, onions, and garlic with a series of mini-mouth explosions.

Unlike gum and breath mints, which only mask bad breath, these teeth-cleaning crystals pack zinc and IsoVoxy to kill odor-causing bacteria. Once dissolved, they leave a fresh scent courtesy of natural peppermint flavors.

Pour the contents of an individual pack into your mouth and swish the crystals around, rubbing them against teeth and tongue. Let them dissolve or swallow and enjoy peppermint-fresh breath!”

Feedback: fresh breath pop rocks? Straight in the trash. One of the two packets was open and spilled a bit. Goodbye…

I’m so disappointed this month…. and I’ve not been disappointed in an entire box EVER. I have high hopes for the StriVectin at least. If I had to grade this month, it would get a big, fat F. Let’s get your game back for March, Birchbox!
