A New Day

Taking a look at all of the things I've been missing

Greetings from the Rocky Mountains!

on December 3, 2013

I’m siting here in my lovely condo, anxiously looking out the window for a storm that is about 2 hours late. Beautiful Vail mountain is supposed to receive 18-31 inches of fresh snow before tomorrow morning and I can’t wait!

Traveling out west is always a challenge for me. I typically get mild altitude sickness that involves a nasty headache that is usually resolved with a few gallons of water, ibuprofen and a good nights rest. Driving from the Denver airport into the mountains was difficult – my headache worsened the higher I went into the mountains. Since I had been up at 3 am Eastern, bedtime came pretty early as I tried to acclimate to my 8,000+ environment. I cranked up my humidifier and crossed my fingers that I would wake up feeling ready to go.

I woke up feeling amazing – no headache and lots of energy. Yesterday was my first day out for the season and despite hours and hours of hard cardio and strength training, my legs only held up for about 5 hours. Considering I have skied very little over the last 2 seasons, I think that is a fairly successful first day out. I made sure to stretch really well and rest my weary muscles in a hot bath. The headache returned, but I chalked that up to mild dehydration.

It’s still early season out here, so the place is pretty empty. You won’t hear me complain about that. Everyone here is amazing – Vail is top notch in customer service. My ski guys (and gals) from Vail Ski and Bike Tech are so great – most of them are former east coast skiers so are totally understanding of my first western ski trip… and get that I’m used to skiing crud, not beautiful conditions. They were able to empathize that in my 25+ years of skiing that I’ve only had about 5 real powder days. So as you can imagine, I’m really pumped to play in a couple feet of fresh stuff.

Here’s a shot of my trip up Eagle Bahn Gondola yesterday:
